Learn more about each LINC level:

  •  LINC LEVEL 1

We welcome and engage participants by using and practicing Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening and Pronunciation to help them integrate in Canadian society. We use functional language within the Canadian context as well as the language of everyday situations such as Banking, Telephone skills, Shopping, Employment, Housing and other topics. We also use computers to assist with language learning needs as part of today’s communication networking system.

We re-enforce functional language learning with events such as multicultural celebrations, pot lucks and field trips as an extension of the themes studied in class.

  •  LINC LEVEL 2

We build on participants basic English language skills by using functional language and real life situations to improve Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. We practice language and grammar structures while learning about Education and the Canadian school system, Housing, Healthcare, Employment and many other themes.

In class learning is supplemented by many presentations, class activities and field trips to Black Creek Pioneer Village, Forsythe Farms, the ROM and the library.

  •  LINC LEVEL 3

One of the main goals at LINC Level 3 is for participants to build on their basic language skills and become more comfortable and confident in their dealings with Canadians in everyday-life situations.
While continually improving their speaking, listening, reading and writing abilities, participants enlarge their knowledge of topics such as the Ontario health care system, telephone etiquette, banking services, police services, landlord/tenant laws, employment standards, the Ontario education system and others.
Outside speakers are invited regularly to provide in-depth information on subjects covered in class. Computers are used for additional research and to improve writing and pronunciation skills.

  • LINC LEVEL 4 - 5

The Level 4 - 5 class transitions learners with a basic grasp of English towards a working knowledge of it. Many of them graduate from this class going to a cooperative or enhance language program, moving up to the next level of LINC instruction, or getting a job. Others find their settlement efforts
rewarded with a fuller understanding of Canadian life, their living environment, and the cultural and social mores they are expected to know.

Activities at this level range from language and pronunciation training, workshops in practical areas such as a balanced diet and tenants' rights, and weekly thematic studies on Canadian citizenship, public libraries, and national celebrations, to computer-assisted learning and personal blogging,
ESL CDs and videos, and field trips to Toronto's Underground City, job fairs, free concerts, and even ski centres. The key to making this transition a success is partnership.

  • LINC LEVELS 6/7

Specialized speakers give presentations about numerous topics ranging from Tenants’ rights to Ontario labour standards, from the primary school system to health care in Ontario.

Advanced readings are taken from the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, and online sources. Themes include Canadian History, Canadian Geography, the Ontario Human Rights Code, taxation, CPP and EI, green household management, personal finances, and many more.

Writing skills and grammar items are reviewed and polished. Listening skills are developed with video, CDs, and CBC Radio One. Popular field trips include outings to the Toronto Public Reference Library, the U of T, the CBC, the St. Lawrence Market, and Riverdale Farm.

The majority of participants leave this level to begin employment or to pursue further studies.
